Community Guidelines

Welcome to Maittri!

Maittri is where meaningful connections can happen. Sometimes you click. Sometimes you don’t. And sometimes the talking leads to more. Opportunity is overflowing. Possibilities are endless. All (adults) are welcome to come explore.

We want Maittri to be a fun, safe and inclusive space where anyone can be themselves while getting to know others. That’s what these Community Guidelines are for–to set expectations for everyone’s behavior, both on and off of the app. So read on; not following these guidelines can have real consequences-from a nudge to a ban.

Maittri's Rules:

1. Consider boundaries. Comfort levels vary person to person. That’s why we don’t allow nudity, sexual content, sexual desires, or looking for sex on your public profile. If you are in a private conversation, these are okay if everyone is okay with it. Consent matters.

2. Share cautiously and thoughtfully. Don’t publicly broadcast your personal information or ways for people to connect with you (no public displays of things like phone numbers, emails, or social handles). Sharing out your bank account numbers or email password is always a bad idea. Don’t ask others to send you their personal details either. Be cautious when sending money to other people. Or maybe don’t at all.

3. Steer clear of violent content. We promote positivity and won’t tolerate any sort of violent content that contains gore, death, images or descriptions of violent acts (against humans or animals), use of weapons, and anything advocating or glorifying self-harm.

If we believe there’s a risk of imminent harm, we may take steps to assist, like reaching out directly with crisis resources.

4. Make personal connections, not biz ones. Don’t advertise, promote, share your social handles to gain followers, sell stuff, fundraise, or campaign. This also means Maittri isn’t the place for any sort of sex work, escort services, or compensated relationships. So, no–don’t use Maittri to find your sugarmamma.

5. Just be you. People want to meet the real you. Not your fake persona. Don’t create a fake account or pretend to be someone you’re not, even if it’s just for fun.

6. Communicate Respectfully. Talking to new people can be tricky, especially when you’re interacting with humans from all walks of life. Respect goes a long way.

If the convo goes unexpectedly awry and you find yourself getting upset or feeling angry–pause and reflect before you react. Harassment, threats, bullying, intimidation, doxing, sextortion, blackmail, or anything intentionally done to cause harm is not allowed.

Maittri is not a place for hate. We will never stand behind racism, bigotry, hatred, or violence based on who someone is, how they identify or what they look like. This includes (but not limited to) someone’s race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, disability, physicality, gender, gender identity, age, national origin, or sexual orientation. If you see someone who doesn't meet your personal criteria, don't like them or unmatch and move on. Don't report them unless you think they've violated our policies.

7. Lead with kindness, not harm. Any acts or behavior that suggests, intends, or causes harm to another member - either on or offline, physically or digitally - will be taken very seriously. This includes anything calling for or inciting harm.

If you have been hurt by someone on Maittri: first, please take care of yourself, and second, take some time to decide what you need to heal, whether that be accountability measures, disclosure, support, or all of the above. If this includes reporting the harm to us, please reach out. We are here for you.

8. Adults only. You must be 18 years of age or older to use Maittri. This also means we don’t allow photos of unaccompanied or unclothed minors, including photos of your younger self–no matter how adorable you were back then.

9. Abide by the law. No illegal content or activities are allowed, ever. This means you can’t use Maittri to buy or sell drugs or counterfeit goods, or ask for assistance to help you break the law. We definitely won’t tolerate anyone using Maittri to advocate or participate in any sort of harm involving minors or human trafficking.

10. One account per person. Each account can only have one owner. For logistic and privacy reasons, we can’t support multiple people accessing the same account, each individual needs to have their own.

11. This is your space, post your own content. Don’t post images or private messages from other people unless you’ve been given consent to do so. Don’t post work that’s copyrighted or trademarked by others.

12. Be an honest member of the Maittri community. Don’t abuse Maittri. Don’t use Maittri to spread false or misleading info. Don’t spam harmful links or unsolicited content. Don’t create mass accounts. Don’t use Maittri to manipulate, con, or get people to send you money or anything else. Don’t submit misleading reports. Don’t use third-party apps to unlock features or game the system.

13. Stick around to stay active. If you don’t log into your Maittri account in two years, we’ll assume it’s zzZZzzZ and may delete it for inactivity. So if you want to be seen in the app, just log in from time to time.

Reporting

As a member of the Maittri community, we encourage you to speak up and speak out. If someone is causing you harm, making you feel uncomfortable, or is violating our Community Guidelines–report it. Your report is always confidential. By reporting, you can help us stop harmful behavior and protect others.

Impact

We take our Community Guidelines and the impact they have on our community seriously. We’ll do everything we can to make sure people follow them. We have a warning system in place, but if violations continue or if the violation is severe, we will respond accordingly.

We reserve the right to investigate and/or terminate accounts without a refund of any purchases if we find you have misused the Service or behaved in a way Maittri deems inappropriate, unlawful, or in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Use, including actions or communications that occur off the Service but involve others you meet through the Service.

Dating Safety Tips

Meeting new people is exciting, but you should always be cautious when interacting with someone you don’t know. Use your best judgment and put your safety first, whether you are exchanging initial messages or meeting in person. While you can’t control the actions of others, there are things you can do to help you stay safe during your Maittri experience.

Online Safety

Never Send Money or Share Financial Information

Never send money, especially over wire transfer, even if the person claims to be in an emergency. Wiring money is like sending cash — it’s nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or trace where the money went. Never share information that could be used to access your financial accounts. If another user asks you for money, report it to us immediately.

Protect Your Personal Information

Never share personal information, such as your social security number, home or work address, or details about your daily routine (e.g., that you go to a certain gym every Monday) with people you don’t know. If you are a parent, limit the information that you share about your children on your profile and in early communications. Avoid sharing details such as your children’s names, where they go to school, or their ages or genders.

Stay on the Platform

Keep conversations on the Maittri platform while you’re getting to know someone. Because exchanges on Maittri are subject to our Safe Message Filters, users with bad intentions often try to move the conversation to text, messaging apps, email, or phone right away.

Be Wary of Long Distance and Overseas Relationships

Watch out for scammers who claim to be from your country but stuck somewhere else, especially if they ask for financial help to return home. Be wary of anyone who will not meet in person or talk on a phone/video call—they may not be who they say they are. If someone is avoiding your questions or pushing for a serious relationship without meeting or getting to know you first — that’s a red flag.

Report All Suspicious and Offensive Behavior

You know when someone’s crossed the line and when they do, we want to know about it. Block and report anyone that violates our terms. Here are some examples of violations:

Protect Your Account

Be sure to pick a strong password, and always be careful when logging into your account from a public or shared computer. Maittri will never send you an email asking for your username and password information — if you receive an email asking for account information, report it immediately.

Meeting in Person

Don’t Be In A Rush

Take your time and get to know the other person before agreeing to meet or chat off Maittri. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to screen for any red flags or personal dealbreakers. A phone or video call can be a useful screening tool before meeting.

Meet in Public and Stay in Public

Meet for the first few times in a populated, public place — never at your home, your date’s home, or any other private location. If your date pressures you to go to a private location, end the date.

Tell Friends and Family About Your Plans

Tell a friend or family member of your plans, including when and where you’re going. Have your cell phone charged and with you at all times.

Be in Control of Your Transportation

We want you to be in control of how you get to and from your date so that you can leave whenever you want. If you’re driving yourself, it’s a good idea to have a backup plan such as a ride-share app or a friend to pick you up.

Know Your Limits

Be aware of the effects of drugs or alcohol on you specifically — they can impair your judgment and your alertness. If your date tries to pressure you to use drugs or drink more than you’re comfortable with, hold your ground and end the date.

Don’t Leave Drinks or Personal Items Unattended

Know where your drink comes from and know where it is at all times — only accept drinks poured or served directly from the bartender or server. Many substances that are slipped into drinks to facilitate sexual assault are odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Also, keep your phone, purse, wallet, and anything containing personal information on you at all times.

If You Feel Uncomfortable, Leave

It’s okay to end the date early if you’re feeling uncomfortable. In fact, it’s encouraged. And if your instincts are telling you something is off or you feel unsafe, ask the bartender or server for help.

Sexual Health & Consent

Protect Yourself

When used correctly and consistently, condoms can significantly reduce the risk of contracting and passing on STI’s like HIV. But, be aware of STIs like herpes or HPV that can be passed on through skin-to-skin contact. The risk of contracting some STIs can be reduced through vaccination.

Know Your Status

Not all STIs show symptoms, and you don’t want to be in the dark about your status. Stay on top of your health and prevent the spread of STIs by getting tested regularly. Here’s where you can find a clinic near you (US only).

Talk About It

Communication is everything: Before you get physically intimate with a partner, talk about sexual health and STI testing. And be aware — in some places, it’s actually a crime to knowingly pass on an STI. Need help starting the conversation? Here are some tips.

Consent

All sexual activity must start with consent and should include ongoing check-ins with your partner. Verbal communication can help you and your partner ensure that you respect each other’s boundaries. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and sex is never owed to anyone. Do not proceed if your partner seems uncomfortable or unsure, or if your partner is unable to consent due to the effects of drugs or alcohol. Read more about consent from RAINN.

Our Commitment

We take the safety, security and well-being of our users very seriously. As the world’s most popular app for meeting new people, we take pride in connecting millions of people every day. While a relatively small percentage of these matches have led to users falling victim to criminal activity, we firmly believe any incident of misconduct or criminal behavior is one too many.

We are continuously exploring new updates, partnerships and technologies to enhance and inform our safety efforts while fostering a respectful environment for meeting new people. Information about our safety tools and practices can be found below. Whether you’re in Santa Monica, São Paulo or Seoul - our goalremains the same: a safe and positive experience for users on our platform.

Our Safety Tools

We utilize a network of industry-leading automated and manual moderation and review tools, systems and processes - and invest significant resources - to prevent, monitor and remove inappropriate behavior (impersonation, harassment and more) from our app.

These tools include automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images; manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user generated reports; shadow-banning suspicious accounts; as well as blocking of email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses and other identifiers associated with bad actors.

We have a zero-tolerance policy on harassment and encourage our community to report any instance of misconduct and/or anyone who violates our Community Guidelines or Terms of Use, via the self-reporting tool featured on all Maittri profiles or by contacting our team online. In the event that we receive such a report, our dedicated community team takes appropriate measures, which may include removing the content, banning the user, or notifying the appropriate law enforcement resources.

We are constantly evaluating and refining our processes, and will always work with law enforcement, where possible, to protect our users.

Fraud

We take the issue of fraud very seriously at Maittri. We have a zero-tolerance policy on predatory behavior of any kind. We have a dedicated fraud team that utilizes a network of industry leading technology that scans for fraud and reviews each and every member profile for red flag language, and conducts manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user generated reports. Ultimately, no one, whether they met on Maittri or not, should ever send money to someone they haven't met in person. In addition, we encourage our members to report any individual who has requested financial information via our self reporting tool. Those two steps will greatly assist in stopping almost every scam in its tracks and help protect the next potential victim.

Data Privacy and Platform Security

Our users’ privacy is a top priority at Maittri, and we work diligently to ensure that we go above and beyond applicable privacy laws and industry standards. We know that your time on the app is a private matter and have strict policies and technical systems in place, including encryption for user photos and messages and tools that restrict employee access to user communications and other user data. When it comes to Maittri users’ data, our sole mandate is keeping our users safe and their data private.

Unlike other social apps, our business model is focused on providing users with premium features, including in-app upgrades and subscriptions, to enhance their experience on our app. We do not sell data to third parties or depend on advertising to maintain or grow our business. In fact, in 2018 less than five percent of all revenue was generated through advertising. Your data is yours. As such, users can request a copy of their data here at any time. The most up-to-date information on our data practices is always available to the general public through our Privacy Policy, which can be also accessed through our app.

Additionally, we are constantly improving our defenses in the battle against those with malicious intent. However, we do not discuss any specific security tools we use or enhancements we may implement to best protect our users and avoid tipping off any would-be offenders.

Our fundamental goal is to introduce our community of users to new people. And while this is a lot of fun, it’s important to remember that there are Community Guidelines that our users must abide by to help make Maittri the best app for meeting new people.

We encourage our users to report any instance of bad behavior on or off our platform. Reporting a user for inappropriate conduct is straightforward and easy to do. On any given profile, users can tap the ‘3 dots’ icon and select ‘Report’. Users can also report another user by submitting a help request online.

Below are more details about some of our policies that we have implemented to keep Maittri more safe.

Dedication to Inclusion

No matter your gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or background, Maittri welcomes you. We strive to make Maittri the most inclusive platform for meeting new people and have worked closely with organizations around the world to constantly improve our practices. Today, we offer users more than 50 gender identities in countries around the world and 9 sexual orientations.

Harassment

We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment on our platform. We encourage all users to report any unacceptable behavior so that the community team can investigate and take appropriate action.

Underage Usage

Maittri is for users 18+, and we work hard to vigilantly maintain an adults only community. We utilize a network of industry-leading automated and manual moderation and review tools, systems and processes - and invest significant resources - to prevent and remove minors from our app.

These tools may include automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images, manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user generated reports, as well as blocking email addresses, phone numbers and other identifiers associated with underage users trying to circumvent these restrictions. We also depend on our users to report any profiles that may depict a minor, so that we can investigate and remove, accordingly.

We do not want minors on Maittri. Period.

Solicitation/Prostitution

Solicitation of any kind - whether attempting to buy or sell - is against our Terms of Use. If a user encounters a profile violating our terms, we encourage them to report via the self-reporting tool featured on all Maittri profiles or online. Making such a report allows our dedicated community team to take appropriate measures, which may include removing the profile or banning the user.

Illegal Substances

Profiles (or Maittri users) promoting illegal substances violate our Terms of Use and we have a system in place to remove these profiles from the app. If a user encounters a profile violating our terms, we encourage them to report it in within the app.
